Yyets.com and Shooter.cn, two of China’s leading websites providing free crowd-sourced subtitles and video resources of foreign movies and TV series to Web users, announced they have been temporarily shut down and are “clearing content”. The closure of these two sites has generated mounting complaints from Web users. And experts speculated that the move might be related to pressure from copyright authorities. In China, the movie channel of China Central Television (CCTV) is the only body legally allowed to purchaseoverseas films and TV series, according to the regulations of the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television (SAPPRFT). And foreign TV series and films can only be broadcast after approval by authorities. Yyets was included in a blacklist of websites providing downloads of pirated works released by the US-based Motion Picture Association of America in October. In April, China began a campaign to “clean up” the Internet that saw popular US TV shows such as The Big Bang Theory and The Good Wife removed from video streaming sites. Authorities claim the sites had either infringed on copyrights or were broadcasting controversial sexual or political content. The regulation of online radio in China is becoming stricter.
