India’s Federal Ministry of New & Renewable Energy has approved the proposal to install a 5 gigawatt solar park in the State of Gujarat.

This is primarily to further the ambitious nationwide plan to have nearly 200 gigawatts of power generated on the nations grid to come from renewable energy sources by 2022. The project aims to solicit  3.7 billion USD in investment into this 11,000 hectare site.  This would be the second solar park in the state of Gujarat, with a 1.2 gigawatt solar park already operating in the city of Charanka. There are plans to open up two additional parks totaling 1.2 gigawatts, but the newly announced 5 gigawatt solar park would be the largest of the potentially four parks in the state.

India has seen an increasingly larger amount of their power generated by wind and solar sources. The market pricing, tariffs, as well as potential investments in their Special Investment Regions including Airbus and Lockheed Martin have positively influenced their nation’s perspective on renewable energy production.
